Abstract

This study was done to investigate the attitude toward death and death orientation of nursing students. The purpose of this study was to provide a basic information to be utilized by nurses to care and attend effectively for patients nearing the moment of death. This study was performed with 151 nursing students of one nursing college in C city from March 1999 to Nov. 1998. The instrument used. for this study was mainly constructed with reference to Schneidman¢¥s attitude questionnaire and Death Orientation questionnaire developed by Thorson and Powell. Data were analyzed by the frequency, means, percentage, standard deviations, F-test, t-test by SPSS program.

The results of this study are as follow;
1. The attitude toward Death
1) In general concept of death ; The first recognition of death is generally over 10 year, old(57.0%) and first sight of death was great-grand parents(49.7%) and had. no experience of talking about death(67.5%). Death is caused by personally uncontrollable events(85.4%). Psychological factor influence to death(60.3%). Efforts of nursing care for the terminally, ill patients must consider the patients age and physical situation(74.8%).
2) As factors influencing to the concepts of death ; Death, as a last course of life(27.3%. Means heaven or hell in young age(57.6%), at present understand and accept death of their own(62.9%) Their attitude toward death were largely determined through their own thinking meditation(43.0%).
3) As the attitude of their own death ; Ofteu thought of death(67.5%) and sometimes desired it to free from psychological burden(79.5%), As to the choosing the time of death preferred senility(58.9%) with quiet and dignified condition (68.9%).
2. Death Orientation
Level of Death Orientation of nursing students was revealed to be moderate (N1n=2.51 SD=0.14, range=1.48`3.80). Among 25 death orientation items respondents revealed the highest concern over the after life (Mn=3.05, SD=0,81), revealed the lowest anxiety about not knowing the next world after his or her death(Mn=1.81, SD=0.78).
3. There were statistically significant difference in death orientation according to religious (F=3,3872, P<.05), family composed (t=5.0328, P<.05).

According to the above information for more satisfaction of the needs of the patients of nearing death, concepts of death, understanding of dying patients, utilization of the courses in needed to improve education for nursing students preparation to death concepts.
